Hello and Welcome to My curry house, the place where I chronicle my simple, everyday recipes made from scratch. I am absolutely delighted to see you here.
Who am I
I am Dr. Urmila, a Biological Research scientist by profession. Currently I live in Freiburg (the place where Black forest cake originated), Germany with my loving husband and a naughty little son.
I love cooking and everything related to food be it cookbooks (Joy of cooking) Novels (The Mango season), Movies (Lunchbox) or TV shows (Chopped). Cooking is therapeutic, whatever my mood, a little time spent in the kitchen can boost me up. however, eating for me is not only nourishment but it’s about the comfort and memories it created when shared with family and friends.
My cooking journey
I started cooking out of necessity. When my mom was in bed rest following a health issue, I had to step in as the only other female in the house to feed my dad and two younger brothers. So, I took my responsibility seriously. I had been a keen observer in my mom’s kitchen, so cooking came to me naturally. It became a passion only when I moved away from home. Browsing recipes, collecting cookbooks and inviting friends for a meal became my favorite pastime. Major part of my long distance calls home was about food.
The region and people I grew up and got married to have influenced my style. Additionally, living and travelling to several countries in Europe, United states and South Asia has inspired me to try a variety of cuisine. Recipes here are straightforward and good for everyday cooking. My husband is my biggest critic and troubleshooter. He is the one who tries, tests and approves it. Family and friends get to taste it before it finds a place on the blog.
The beginning of a blog
Few years ago, I shared my recipes on a discussion forum. My friends there liked the simplicity of my recipes and the ease of replicating them and gave me the idea of starting a food blog. After a couple of months, I started Sweet and spicy corner as a means of sharing my recipes with you. Recently, I shifted from blogger to this self hosted WordPress site. However it had came to a standstill with the birth of my son and the extra responsibilities that comes with it. But now I am ready to continue this Culinary journey with you.
Why My Curry House?
Everyone has their own interpretation of curry. For me, first and foremost it is the saucy concoction I use to mix up my rice or to eat my flatbreads. Secondly, it is the curry that makes each meal different from the other. Hence, the constant question that arose after every meal was ‘what’s the curry for the next meal?’. Curries can be simple or complicated, wet, dry or semi-dry. It could be Indian, Thai or Japanese. Curries intrigued me further after my marriage. several curries in mine and my husband’s family the same name are look and taste different. The method of preparation is also different (sambar, erisseri, avial to name a few). I will be sharing a lot of these curries with you here. As a result, I feel that ‘My curry House’ is the apt name for the blog.
I always believe that a strange new dish for one person could be another’s comfort food. You could follow the recipes here as is or use them as a starting point for your own experimentations. Either way, I am sure you will find something that you will enjoy. So, I invite you to join me on my culinary journey. Let us have fun and create memories along the way.
